Contzen family photographs, ca. 1870-1920 (bulk 1890-1910).

Chiefly portraits of the Contzen family members, a few dating from the 1870s but mostly from the early 1900s. Philip Contzen photographs include his home at 611 S. 5th Avenue, gold placer mining at Canada del Oro, surveyors and the U.S. Surveyor Generals Office, U.S. Border Patrol agents near Sasabe, and part of Capt. Philip Contzen's Company D of the Arizona National Guard in the 1890s. There are photographs of Elizabeth Borton, Frank Conrow, J.B. Girard, Cirilio Leon, and T.F. Velasco. Photographs of Frank Conrow include an image of the Sam Chung Lung store, 1914, Mexican Americans, adobe homes, and men playing Tajo. There is one image of San Xavier Mission and the surrounding area, ca. 1880. Photographs of a 1892 Labor Day Parade, taken at Toole Avenue and 5th Street, included labor union participants, views of the Ramona Hotel, Cactus Saloon, and the Tucson Fire Dept.

Surveyors; Fritz Contzen accompanied Emory's boundary survey group to Arizona in 1854. His son Philip, also a surveyor, worked for the U.S. General Land Office, and as City Engineer and Pima County Surveyor. Philip's son, Frederick, was a surveyor for the U.S. Geological Survey, Soil Conservation Service and the National Parks Service.
